Nippers Happens Because of Volunteers
Bay & Basin Community Nippers is a volunteer-run club. Every Nippers session is made possible by parents, carers and community members who give their time to help our kids learn, have fun and stay safe around the water.
You don't need to be a lifesaver, an experienced swimmer or a Nippers expert to get involved.
There are roles both on the beach and behind the scenes, and training and support are available.
Even a small contribution makes a difference.
Helping on Nippers Days
There are lots of ways parents and carers can lend a hand during our Sunday sessions.
Age Managers
Age Managers help guide a group of Nippers through their activities each week.
Training, activity resources and support are provided, and you'll work alongside other volunteers.
It's a great role for someone who enjoys working with children and being actively involved in Nippers.
Water Safety
Water Safety volunteers help keep our Nippers safe during water-based activities.
This role requires appropriate Surf Life Saving qualifications and training. We'll help interested volunteers understand what's required and how to complete the necessary training.
Gear & Equipment
There's plenty that happens before the kids hit the water.
Volunteers help set up, move and pack away boards, flags, tents and other equipment before and after sessions.
No specialist skills are required — just a willingness to lend a hand.
BBQ
Our Sunday BBQ is part of Nippers life!
Families help with setting up, cooking, serving and packing away the BBQ throughout the season.
Age groups may be rostered to assist on particular weeks, with details shared with families during the season.
Helping Behind the Scenes
Not every volunteer role involves getting wet. There are plenty of ways to contribute using skills you may already have.
Administration
Help with registrations, member information, communications and other club administration.
Fundraising & Events
Help organise fundraising activities, special events, Presentation Day and other club activities.
Communications
Help with social media, photographs, website updates and keeping families informed.
Committee
Our committee helps guide the club, plan each season and make sure everything is ready for our Nippers and families.
Committee roles are a great way to become more involved in the club and help shape its future.
Volunteer Requirements
The safety and wellbeing of our Nippers is our priority.
All registered adult volunteers are required to meet our child-safety requirements before volunteering with the club.
Working With Children Check
Volunteers must hold a current NSW Working With Children Check (WWCC) and provide their WWCC number and details to the club for verification. A volunteer Working With Children Check is free through Service NSW.
Child Safety Training
Volunteers are also required to complete the relevant Surf Life Saving Child Safety online training. This training helps ensure everyone involved in Nippers understands their responsibilities in creating a safe, supportive and child-focused environment.
Role-Specific Training
Some volunteer roles require additional Surf Life Saving qualifications or training. This particularly applies to roles such as Water Safety and Age Managers, where volunteers need to complete the appropriate training before undertaking the role. We'll help you understand what is required and support you through the training process.

Most importantly, the number of children we're able to safely accommodate can depend on the number of registered and qualified volunteers we have available.
The more volunteers we have, the more opportunities we can provide for local children.
